One of the most typical experiences in Switzerland is a ride on the rack railway from the shores of Lake Lucerne up to an altitude of 1,798 metres on the Rigi. This is the first cogwheel railway in Europe. You can ride in restored carriages that date back to the early days of the railway. Some of the steam locomotives date back to the 1920s. From the top, the view stretches all the way to the Black Forest in Germany. A popular excursion is the round trip by boat from Lucerne to Vitznau, where you board the rack railway to Rigi Kulm. From there, take the cogwheel railway down to Arth-Goldau and the train back to Lucerne.
